Fernish 2020: Our Year In Review

2020 was a year unlike any other. It challenged us all, yet gave us an opportunity to support one another when it mattered most. We also saw our lifestyles evolve like never before. People transformed their homes, using design inspiration to upgrade their spaces in practical, beautiful, and creative ways. It’s fair to say that we all have a greater appreciation for the comforts of home.

At Fernish, we worked hard to support both our customers and employees, while adapting our business to the changing world around us. And through it all, we continued to make tremendous strides toward our goals of providing furniture flexibility, sustainability, and affordability.

So, what impact did we have?

We saved our customers money… a lot of money.

We hit a huge milestone in 2020 — $20 million in customer savings. That’s $20 million our customers saved by choosing Fernish over traditional furniture ownership, therefore avoiding the hassles of buying, moving, storing, and selling furniture. Now those savings can be spent elsewhere — on the people, things, and experiences that matter most.

We kept low-quality, disposable furniture out of circulation.

This year alone, we spared 247 tons of furniture from ending up in a landfill, and saved 1,042 metric tons of CO2 from entering the environment. That weight is equivalent to 2.5 blue whales (the largest animal on the planet). And if stacked end-to-end, the furniture we saved would reach 7.1 miles deep (even deeper than the base of the Pacific). Each piece of furniture we get back goes through a multi-step refurbishment process, allowing us to give it a second, third, and even fourth life. And by working with only trusted, credible manufacturers like CB2 and EQ3, we’re able to provide high quality pieces and guarantee they’ll stand the test of time.

We saw your need for functional-yet-cozy spaces.

As we saw homes and lifestyles shift, we realized the need to adapt. Our top categories this year were lighting, bedframes, pillows & throws, side tables, and dressers. In comparison to 2019, we saw the largest increase in demand for our home décor items — things like rugs, pillows, throws, mirrors and wall art flew off our trucks. Our businesses changed as well, and an entire remote workforce was born. So we expanded our offerings and added new desks, office chairs, shelving and lighting options to the mix. Fun fact: 784,267 hours were spent working on Fernish desks in 2020.

We saved (more of) your time.

As we look forward to 2021, no one is more excited than us about the direction we’re headed. In the past few months we began servicing both Orange and Ventura County, while increasing our daily operations in Los Angeles and Seattle. We continued to deliver and assemble hundreds of items every week, leading to 610 days of furniture assembly customers didn’t have to do.

None of this could have been accomplished without your support, and for that we are forever grateful. Here’s to 2021 — we’ll have more exciting news to share, and are humbled to have you along for the journey.
